Alleys, paths and green spaces in Beijing will be targeted in a cleanliness campaign from August, Beijing Daily reported on Friday.
An index monitoring cleanliness showed a year-on-year decrease in the capital from April to June, according to the Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment.
More people traveled to the city, and lots of construction projects were under way, all factors bringing the index down, the commission said.
Xicheng district and Yanqing county were the cleanest areas during the three months, the index showed.
Experts suggested the “clean index” should be taken as an important qualification for local environmental departments, and those who perform badly should be punished.
