The father of a girl in Sichuan province who failed the college entrance examination this year has attempted to force his daughter and wife to commit suicide with him several times, Jianghan Commercial Daily reported.
The girl who is only identified as Fu from Gongan county achieved well in high school but only got a score of more than 300 in the examination, while the lowest score needed to become an undergraduate in Sichuan is 460.
Fu's family is quite poor and makes a living mainly by picking up trash. It was only with the help of a kind-hearted person that Fu was able to continue her study at a key high school.
After Fu's father learned of her performance in the examination, he became mentally unwell and tried to force his wife and daughter to jump into a river with him several times.
Fu's grandmother swallowed pesticide after Fu's father was stopped by villagers on June 27 from jumping into the river with his daughter.
The grandmother was taken to hospital where she is out of danger. Villagers have started to raise money to help the family.
