CHENGDU - Two people died and five others are missing in southwest China's Sichuan province after torrential rain triggered flooding and landslides in the region on Sunday, local authorities said.

The downpours that hit some regions in the province have left two residential houses in a village in Zizhong County, Neijiang City, collapsed, killing one person, sources with the provincial flood control office said.

The rainfalls also caused a landslide in Chuanshan District, Suining city, around 11 am, toppling a house and killing one person inside.

Search and rescue efforts are under way to reach five people who have been carried away by flooding, sources said.

The provincial meteorological center said the heavy rains will persist in the next few days but will abate on Monday.

China's meteorological authority forecast on Sunday that heavy rains will hit some regions in Sichuan from Sunday to Tuesday.

The central and western part of the Sichuan basin will witness heavy rains from 100 to 200 millimeters, while some parts will have rainfalls of up to 300 millimeters, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Also on Sunday, rain-triggered flooding killed four people and buried four others under house debris in east China's Anhui province, local authorities said.
