An entrepreneur in Dongguan, Guangdong province, has offered 100,000 yuan ($16,000) to the head of the local environmental protection bureau to swim in a filthy local river for 10 minutes.
The move is aimed at drawing government attention to local pollution problems.
Xiao Gongjun announced the offer on his micro blog on Monday, after reading a report that an entrepreneur in Zhejiang province had offered 200,000 yuan to the chief of the local environmental protection bureau to swim in a polluted river for 20 minutes.
Xiao lives by the Hanxi River, which smells in warm weather, according to the Nanfang Daily.
He reported the river's condition to the Ministry of Environmental Protection when the Dongguan government was applying for the title of a national model city in environmental protection. The city won the title in 2011.
