KUNMING - Firefighters on Friday are continuing their efforts to contain a mountain fire that has been raging for more than 30 hours in Dali, a mountain resort area in Southwest China's Yunnan province.
Thousands of firefighters and servicemen have been working in shifts to extinguish the fire that broke out around 4 pm on Wednesday in Huangjia Village of Dali City. There have been no reports of casualties so far.
Forest police in Dali said the fire was threatening a transformer substation, a LPG station and a firecracker storage house 11 pm Thursday.
Firefighters toiled to dig a fire isolation ditch to stop it from sprawling to the two "powder kegs." They have been watering bushes to prevent the fire from approaching nearby plants.
The local firefighting department hoped to contain the fire on Friday.
Initial investigation showed waste incineration by a local sanitation worker started the fire, which was fueled by strong winds and dry weather.
