More primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens will be built in Shanghai to meet increasing demand after a baby boom in the city.
According to the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the city will build and renovate a total of 1,042 primary and secondary schools and kindergartens by the end of 2015, 80 percent of which will be in the city's suburban areas.
Since 2007, Shanghai has seen a birth boom. Starting in 2009, the number of births in the city was over 180,000 for three consecutive years.
Children born around 2008 are now old enough to attend kindergarten.
The commission also said it is working to build 30 more kindergartens in 2013.
In addition, the city is also developing private kindergartens and preschool centers.
