Three of the 7,299 couples in Shanghai who tied the knot on Jan 4, 2013, a date considered lucky for marriage, had got divorced as of Tuesday, local media reported on Friday.
The pronunciation of Jan 4, 2013, resembles "love you for a lifetime" in Chinese, making it one of the most auspicious and romantic days for marriage.
Seven couples who were married on Dec 12, 2012 - seen as another auspicious and special day - have also been divorced, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported, citing figures from the city's Civil Affairs Bureau.
Chen Zhanbiao, head of the marriage registration department at the bureau, said some young people get married just because the date is "once in 1,000 years" without giving it serious and thorough consideration.
Gao Huiqi, a marriage mediator in Shanghai's Yangpu district, said many young people are rushed into marriage due to pressure from their parents.
