Free wifi service has become available for residents in the downtown area of Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang province, the first time nationwide that free wifi has covered a whole city.
The government announced on Tuesday afternoon that there are 2,000 telecommunication stations covering 220 square kilometers of the city’s urban area where the “i-hangzhou” signal can be searched by cell phones and iPads.
Users should type their cell phone numbers into the log-in page and the access code will be sent to their phones, according to Zhejiang Online.
Yang Fusong, deputy director of the Hangzhou economic and information technology commission, said that free service is scheduled to be available for computers next year.
The service is only available outdoors and people cannot access it at home, he added.
