YILIANG, Yunnan - A county in Southwest China's Yunnan province on Thursday hosted a memorial service for those killed in deadly earthquakes earlier this month.
Nearly 2,000 people from Yiliang county attended the ceremony, which started at 11:19 am amid the wails of car horns and sirens.
Multiple earthquakes, measuring up to 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck Yiliang and neighboring areas in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces on Sept 7, killing 81 people and injuring more than 800 others.
The earthquakes caused direct economic losses of about 3.69 billion yuan ($586 million) in the two provinces, according to the provincial civil affairs departments.
