At least 43 killed in SW China quake

43 peole are confirmed dead after the quake in China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces Friday, Xinhua reported.

More than 100,000 people have been evacuated in Yunnan as of 3:10 pm, local civil affairs authorities said.

The 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the border area of Yiliang county of Yunnan and Weining county of Guizhou at 11:19 am and the depth of its epicenter was about 14 km at 27.5 degrees north latitude and 104.0 degrees east longitude.

Among the 43 victims, 42 were from Yiliang as the epicenter was just about 15 km from Yiliang's county seat. The other one was from Zhaoyang district of Zhaotong city, said an official with the provincial civil affairs department.

The quake has disrupted the lives of over 700,000 people in Yiliang and Daguan counties as well as Zhaoyang district, which are all under the administration of Zhaotong.

The 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the border area of Yiliang county of Yunnan and Weining county of Guizhou at 11:19 am and the depth of its epicenter was about 14 km at 27.5 degrees north latitude and 104.0 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The deaths and losses were reported by the civil affairs department of Yunnan. Casualties are still unknown in Guizhou.

The quake, which was also felt in neighboring Sichuan Province, was followed by several other tremors.

Two other earthquakes, respectively measured at 5.6 and 3.2 magnitude, shook the border area of Yiliang county of Yunnan province and Weining county of neighboring Guizhou province.

A minor quake measuring 4.4 jolted Yiliang county at 1:12 pm Friday Beijing Time, the fourth earthquake that occurred in a day in this region, according to the CENC.
