A roof collapse in downtown Changsha, Hunan province, Thursday afternoon trapped five residents, one of whom was injured.
The roof of the dilapidated, 300-square-meter building fell in at 1 pm.
Liu Chiyu, a 22-year-old resident who was taking a nap, said he was awoken by "severe pain" and loud cracking sounds.
"The room turned to be very bright and the whole ceiling was gone. I was stuck in collapsed bricks and walls," said Liu, who was bruised in the collapse.
Four other residents also in the house were rescued.
A witness surnamed Li said the building is over 60 years old, and the wood beams are rotten.
"It used to be a transport company's warehouse. Then it was reconstructed to be a two-story residence for 18 households," Li said.
Huang Yunsheng, chief of the transport company, said the building was declared dangerous in 2007.
"A professional construction team came to examine it and made out a maintenance plan just 10 days ago. No one expected it to collapse so soon," Huang said.
Members of the building's 18 households are temporarily staying in the Bixiang resident community.
