China jails smuggling kingpin Lai for life

A court convicted Lai Changxing, who was extradited from Canada, on Friday and sentenced him to life imprisonment on smuggling and bribery charges, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The Intermediate People's Court in Xiamen,the port city which operated as his base in East China's Fujian province, also ordered that Lai, who had fled to Canada after being accused of operating a vast smuggling ring in the 1990s, be stripped of all his personal assets, Xinhua reported.
