BEIJING - A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called upon personnel departments to strictly follow rules in local elections and harshly punish those who try to go around election regulations.
"Education, supervision, punishment and reform are all of essential importance in preventing misconduct in recruiting government personnel. This year's local elections must continue to stick to discipline and openness," said Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, at a Thursday meeting.
According to a statement released after the meeting, Party committees in 17 provincial-level regions, as well as several cities and counties, will hold elections this year.
Li urged local officials to carefully supervise the upcoming elections.
