The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, aka The Global Fund, has decided to cut its aid to China beginning in September, the Beijing Times reported.
The organization said it thinks the country has the economic strength to fund its own grants.
The Global Fund, the world’s leading financer of programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, suspended funding worth millions to China in late May, complaining that the country was not doing enough to involve community-based groups.
Funding will be issued in September, but more than half of the money will be cut, according to China Country Coordination Mechanism. The exact amount has yet to be announced.
The Global Fund conducted a financial examination on China’s aid in July and proposed that China cover expenses for labor and training for the prevention and treatment of the diseases.
But China thinks the cuts are for no sound reason.
