BEIJING - Beijing is fulfilling its promise to ensure education for the children of migrant workers, despite the fact that 24 migrant schools in three of the city's districts have been closed, education authorities said Friday.

More than 14,000 children, mostly in the outlying areas of the Haidian, Chaoyang and Daxing districts, were affected by the closure of the schools, the Beijing Municipal Education Committee said Tuesday.

By authorizing private schools to operate in public school buildings, a total of 4,300 seats have been reserved for migrant children from nine schools that were closed in Chaoyang District, said Liu Libin, deputy director of the Chaoyang District Education Committee.

The privately-run Xinghe Bilingual School, Anmin School and Boya School have been authorized to set up branch schools for their children in eight public school districts.

The demolition of the migrant schools in Chaoyang district started in June and will last till September. The plan to move the schools' students to public schools was finalized before the demolition work was initiated.

The affected children and their parents have been told to register for entry at the public schools, according to Liu.

Four schools in Haidian district will be closed this year due to security problems, according to Qiao Jian, a spokesman from the district's education committee. Children from the four closed schools in Haidian will be transferred to government-run schools when the new semester begins in September.

A total of 9 million yuan ($1.4 million) will be spent to rebuild the demolished migrant schools and stock them with new equipment and facilities. Authorities are working to recruit 144 teachers to staff the new schools, Qiao said.

Officials with the Daxing District Education Committee confirmed that migrant students from schools that were closed in the district are also being moved to public schools.
