BEIJING - China hopes to see Egypt maintain social stability and avoid further casualties, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Thursday.

Hong made the remarks at a press conference in reply to questions about recent clashes between protestors and police and security forces in Cairo.

China has noticed related reports about the clashes, Hong added.

Over 1,000 Egyptians were injured in overnight clashes between police and protestors in central Cairo that started Tuesday.
