A resident of Changde, Hunan province, has approached the media for help to expose a self-confessed "health guru" who is causing his wife to go bald.

Since May, Li's wife, a 36-year-old engineer, has virtually worshipped the Shanghai health expert, who persuaded her to give up eating rice and noodles, saying they are the main cause of chronic illnesses among the Chinese.

Over the past few months, Li's wife has started losing a lot of hair and finds it extremely difficult to sleep.

Last month, the woman traveled to Shanghai to meet the health guru and returned with products worth more than 10,000 yuan ($1,500).

Li said his wife, who used to be a healthy and active woman, seems to be possessed.
