BEIJING - Internet portal Sina.com Tuesday claimed victory in battle for China's micro-blog market, announcing it has 50 million registered users of its Twitter-like service after 14 months of operation.
Sina launched its Chinese-language micro-blogging service on August 28 last year and had attracted 10 million users by April.
The company claimed its "absolute leading position" in China's micro-blog business in a statement issued on Tuesday, although competitors such as Netease, Sohu and Tencent have not revealed their micro-blog user numbers.
All the providers of accessible micro-blogging services in China are domestic companies.
China has the world's largest number of Internet users at about 400 million.
Allowing users to post pictures and video clips with up to 140 Chinese characters, Sina's micro-blogging service has become a major channel of breaking news items on the Internet.
"One of the major advantages compared with other products is that Sina's micro-blogging is more compatible with mobile devices," said Sina vice president Peng Shaobin at a press conference in Beijing.
According to Sina statistics, about 38 percent of new information every day is posted through Internet-connected mobile terminals. The proportion would increase with the development of third-generation telecommunications, said Peng.
