As much as 3.08 billion yuan will be invested in the highway from Lhasa to Nyingchi, and the 409.2 kilometers road will be the highest freeway in the world, once it is completed. When it is opened in 2017, driving time between the two cities will be cut from eight to four hours.
"It will be much safer to drive to Tibet in the future, but the views will be the same," Chen said.
Tips for your Tibet trip
Remember to take these items
・ You will need to take Rhodiola capsules or Ginkgo leaf capsules two or three days before arriving on the plateau to avoid altitude sickness. Check with a doctor before your trip.
・ It is recommended that you drink more water. Cola, coffee and energy drinks are also advised to avoid headaches.
・ Stock up on food with a high sugar level. Try to eat snacks with plant protein, which are low in fats.
・ Take plenty of water, sunscreen and clothes along with you. The sun is strong while the temperature can vary in Tibet.
・ Make sure you have your border and identity cards.
What to avoid
・Try not to smoke or drink alcohol when you are traveling at altitude.
・Strenuous exercise should also be avoided when you are traveling at altitude. This will accelerate your metabolism and lead to hypoxia, which deprives the body of adequate oxygen.
・ Plenty of sleep is recommended,
・Altitude problems can affect children below the age of 16 or adults who are more than 60 years old.
Traveling at altitude is not recommended for people with heart or lung problems. If you are in any doubt, check with a doctor before traveling.
