ASEAN welcomes general election in Myanmar

HANOI - Vietnam, the rotating chair of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) this year, said on behalf of ASEAN that it welcomed the general election in Myanmar, Vietnam News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The statement was made by Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem in an announcement on Monday.

Khiem said the general election is a new development in realizing the seven-point roadmap for democracy. ASEAN encouraged Myanmar to further promote the national reconciliation and democratization process for the goal of stability and development of the nation, according to the announcement.

ASEAN also expected Myanmar to closely work together with ASEAN and the United Nations in this process, said the announcement.

ASEAN is willing to support Myanmar whenever it is needed and in compliance with ASEAN Charter, according to the announcement.
