Sailing competitions spur economic growth in Qinhuangdao

A total of 176 sailors from 14 provinces and municipalities set sail on Friday as the 2026 national sailing championships and national youth sailing championships opened in Qinhuangdao, a seaside city in North China's Hebei province.

The five-day event, held in the Beidaihe New District, features ILCA 6, ILCA 7, and 470 classes — all core Olympic disciplines — and is jointly hosted by the general administration of sport of China's water sports management center, the Chinese Yachting Association, the Hebei provincial sport bureau, and the Qinhuangdao municipal government.

By combining the adult national championships with the youth championships, organizers have created a unified competition that covers both Olympic and non-Olympic events.

The format is designed to test the country's competitive level in sailing and to give young athletes a crucial platform to gain experience and advance their careers, the organizers said.

Adult and youth fleets are racing side by side, giving younger sailors a rare opportunity to test themselves against more experienced rivals and accelerate their development, helping to strengthen China's talent pipeline for the sport.

Qinhuangdao boasts a 184.88-kilometer coastline and broad sea areas with favorable water depth, hydrology, and wind conditions. Its mild climate allows sailing training and regattas for more than seven months a year, making it an internationally recognized venue for high-level maritime competitions, according to local authorities.

The city has been developing its sailing industry by integrating sports with tourism. It has built standardized sailing docks, professional training bases, regulated offshore race zones, and has established an ILCA Asian sailing training center.

This has attracted a large number of sports enthusiasts and study-tour groups, authorities said.

Supported by dedicated industry policies, the coastal city is shaping a comprehensive sailing ecosystem that includes event hosting, professional training, public experiences, and educational programs.

Local authorities said the growth of sailing is not only promoting water sports nationwide, but is also energizing the coastal sports industry chain, boosting related sectors such as catering, accommodation, cultural tourism, and research-based travel.

The city is steadily turning event traffic and visitor flows into tangible economic gains.
