A man suspected of stabbing one person to death and injuring another eight was detained in Dongguan, a Pearl River Delta city in south China's Guangdong province, on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Dongguan's Humen township, located at the mouth of the Pearl River, at about 7:40 pm Monday when a man surnamed Cen used a kitchen knife to stab local residents in the township's Huaide neighborhood.

In addition to one person who was killed on the spot, two were seriously wounded and six lightly injured. Cen fleed afterward.

Police and medical help arrived soon after the case was reported. All victims were sent to hospitals nearby and a thorough investigation has been launched.

Party and government leaders from Dongguan city and Humen township arrived at the local hospital on Monday night to visit the wounded and urged medical staff to do what they can to help the victims, as well as relevant departments to investigate the case to its full extent to ensure good and sound social security. This is of prime concern as the Spring Festival, starting Feb 5 this year, is around the corner.
