World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya fired the starting shot Sunday morning as some 38,000 running enthusiasts from around the world participated in the 2018 Shanghai International Marathon.

Ethiopia's Seifu Tura Abdiwak claimed first place in the men's full marathon with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds, followed by his countryman, Tsegaye Mekonnen Asefa, and Kenya's Dickson Kipsang Tuwei.

In the women's race, Ethiopia's Yebrgual Melese Arage crossed the finish line first with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 37 seconds, followed by Azmera Abreha Gdey, also from Ethiopia. Third place went to Kenyan Betty Wilson Lempus.

Former world record holder Dennis Kimetto of Kenya ran in the marathon, which started in the city center.
