Miner rescued from coal mine dies in hospital

One of the two miners rescued Sunday afternoon after a rock burst accident at a coal mine died in hospital in East China’s Shandong province on Sunday night, taking the death toll to three, according to local authorities.

As of 9 am Monday, 18 workers were still trapped in the mine.

The accident took place at around 11 pm Saturday at Longyun Coal Mining Co at Yuncheng county. A total of 22 workers were trapped following the rock burst.

The miner are trapped in a tunnel, which has been blocked by falling coal seam at the two ends, according to Pan Zhongmin, an official of the company.

He said rescuers are working to clear the path to reach the miners.

A rock burst is a violent fracture of rock that can occur in mines. The cause of this one is being investigated.
