Chinese mainland tech titan Dajiang Innovations Technology Co (DJI) played host to a VIP visitor on Sunday – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad – who visited the group's Beijing branch on the third day of his official visit to China.

After being briefed on the latest products and technological achievements by Shenzhen-based DJI – one of the world's largest drone manufacturers -- Mahathir expressed keen interest in the application of drones in agriculture and plant protection.

He asked for details about the MG-1P, an unmanned aerial vehicle for agriculture and plant protection, after watching demonstrations of the device and other drones.

DJI President Luo Zhenhua said the company had sold more than 16,000 drones for agriculture-related uses as of June this year, maintaining a firm lead in the industry.

"While promoting efficiency in modern agriculture, drones also offer opportunities for young people in the rural areas to start their own businesses," Luo said.
