ANKARA -- The Turkish authorities said on Monday that the police has arrested two male suspects involved in an earlier shooting at the US embassy in Ankara.

The two men, who have criminal records, were nabbed with weapons and confessed their acts, the Ankara governor's office said in a statement.

The vehicle they used in the attack was also found, the statement added.

Earlier in the day, Turkey's Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin condemned the attack on Twitter, describing it as "a clear attempt to create chaos" amid an escalating row between the United States and Turkey.

"Turkey is a safe country and all foreign missions in the country are safeguarded by laws," he tweeted.

At least four gunshots were reportedly fired in front of Gate 6 of the US embassy from a white car at around 5 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), causing no injury, CNNTurk reported.

The attack came amid high tensions between the two NATO allies over the detention of a US pastor in Turkey.

Turkey has seen its currency rate thrown into turmoil in the past week after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Turkey, including doubling tariffs on its aluminium and steel.

In response, Ankara has decided to steeply hike taxes on some US products.
