The film Shoplifter, the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in May, has been screening in China since Friday.

The award-winning film is directed by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who has two films released in China this year -- The Third Murder screened in March.

Adapted from a real news event in Japan, the film tells the story of an impoverished family who steals to survive.

Hirokazu Kore-eda, born in 1962, is a master of family-themed films, using a plain and simple style to convey deep and meaningful messages. He gained popularity with Chinese audiences with his two films -- Our Little Sister and After the Storm.

Since he started making films in the early 1990s, Hirokazu Kore-eda has directed many well-known films such as I Wish and After Life.
