Heat wave continues; break is coming

"The obviously weaker cold air from the Arctic region is a major reason for the high temperatures in the northern hemisphere this summer," it said.

In addition to the weaker cold air, the subtropical high pressure systems in the western Pacific that affect East Asia are further north and are at more than twice their average intensity. All these result in abnormally high temperatures in South Korea, Japan and central and eastern parts of China, it added.
