Weaker cold air from the north and a subtropical high-pressure system that is further north this year are to blame for the wide-ranging heat, the observatory said.

As of Monday, the country averaged 6.8 days with temperatures higher than 35 C since April, the third-highest since 1961. This year's temperatures are not only long-lasting and wide-ranging, but also of high intensity, according to a statement from the China Meteorological Administration on Monday.
