As used cars sales continue to surge in China, sedans remain the most popular choices for both buyers and sellers, according to a report from the country's leading life services platform 58.com.

The report released on Monday shows that sedans accounted for 65 percent of used cars for sale at the website in June, up 12.86 percent from May, and 64 percent of potential buyers looked for sedans in the same month.

SUVs lagged far behind sedans, with merely 19 percent of buyers showing interest in them. Most of SUV buyers were men, according to the report.

In terms of brands, Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda were the top three best-sellers in June, up 13.29 percent year-on-year.

Volkswagen Jetta, Toyota Camry and Audi A6L were the most popular used car models in June, and all of them were in short supply.

Overall, more than 70 percent of buyers would like to pay no more than 100,000 yuan ($14,700) for a used car, which should preferably be less than eight years old.

Buyers showed more interest in cars with 1.6 liter-2.0 liter engines, which accounted for 54 percent of used cars sold in June.

In terms of car colors, white (38 percent), black (22 percent) and grey (10 percent) were the most popular ones in June, according to the report.

Used cars have been on the rise in recent years in China, with their sales expected to hit 15 million in 2018, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA).

Last year, 12.4 million were sold in China, up 19.33 percent year-on-year. Overall sales revenue hit 809.2 billion yuan last year, marking a growth of 34 percent year-on-year.

CADA President Shen Jinjun said that compared with the United States, there is still huge potential in China's used car sector.
