The renovation project of the Tian'anmen Rostrum, a landmark building in the center of Beijing, has been approved by the State Administration of Culture Heritage and will begin on June 15.

As a brick and wood structure, the Tian'anmen Rostrum has been revamped or rebuilt many times during its history, stretching over six centuries. Here are some major renovations of the famous structure in the era of the People's Republic of China.

In 1970, the old Tian'anmen Rostrum was demolished to eliminate safety hazards accumulated over centuries. A new building was constructed according to its original size and form. It was the largest renovation of the Tian'anmen Rostrum after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The photo shows the rebuilt Tian'anmen Rostrum on May 1, 1970. [Photo/People's Daily]
