Fang Yu and his parents have donated 24,200 ml blood over a six–year period, saving more than 100 people's lives, China Youth Daily reported on Tuesday.

Fang Yu, born in Dezhou city, Shandong province, is a senior university student studying at the chemistry and material science college of Ludong University in Yantai, Shandong. He started to donate blood in July 2015, while his father started in May 2012.

His father got his first certificate for blood donation after donating that year, when he saw people volunteering in a mobile blood donation vehicle. Since then, he has regularly donated blood at the central blood station in Dezhou, as has Fang's mother. The couple has donated 20,400 ml over six years, and Fang's father was granted a national prize for his blood donation from 2014 to 2015.

Fang made his first blood donation in the central blood station of Dezhou in 2015 when he turned 20. He was a freshman at Ludong University and joined the university's Youth Volunteer Association.

During the 2018 winter holiday, Fang Yu was informed his blood type matched most successfully with a cancer patient among six blood donors. He decided to donate his platelets for the patient even though it had been only 20 days since his last donation — 30 days is the standard waiting period.

During his four years in university, Fang Yu donated 3,800 ml blood in Dezhou and Yantai on 10 separate occasions. His mother cooks his favorite dishes every time he makes a donation.

"I am proud of saving other people's lives with my blood," Fang said. "I will encourage my children to donate blood and pass on love and responsibility in the future."
